Acyclo-V is available only with a doctor`s prescription.
There is no evidence that Acyclo-V is addictive.
Your doctor will tell you how much to take and when to take it.
Take Acyclo-V exactly as directed by your doctor.
To treat shingles, the usual dose of Acyclo-V is one tablet every four hours while awake (a total of five tablets daily).
Some patients will take a different dose. Your doctor will decide the right dose for you.
Start taking Acyclo-V within 72 hours of the rash appearing.
Suggested times to take your tablets are 7 a.m., 11 a.m., 3 p.m., 7 p.m. and 11 p.m. These times are marked on the pack to help you to remember when to take the tablets. You may prefer to take the tablets at different times to suit your daily schedule, but you should take them approximately every 4 hours.
The tablets may be swallowed whole with a glass of water. The tablets may also be dispersed in at least a quarter of a glass of water (about 50 mL) and then swallowed.
If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the dose you missed and take your next dose when you are meant to.
Otherwise, take the missed dose as soon as you remember, and then go back to taking your tablets as you would normally.
Do not take a double dose to make up for the dose you missed.
If you miss more than one dose, or are not sure what to do, check with your doctor or pharmacist.
For shingles, Acyclo-V is usually taken for 7 days.
Keep taking Acyclo-V until you finish the pack or for as long as your doctor recommends.
Do not stop taking Acyclo-V, even if you feel better after a few days, unless advised by your doctor. Your shingles may not clear completely if you stop taking your medicine too soon.
Immediately telephone your doctor or Poisons Information Centre (telephone 13 11 26) for advice, or go to Accident and Emergency at the nearest hospital if you think that you or anyone else may have taken too much Acyclo-V. Do this even if there are no signs of discomfort or poisoning.
You may need urgent medical attention.
